Valentines’s Day Cards created and sold for Valentine’s Day 1999 during Aisha’s Freshman year at North Carolina Central University. Cards were made in partnership with Dayan Knox, a songwriter, who provided poems for each card.
Clients were offered custom-made Valentine’s Day Cards – this offer was so successfully roughly 50 cards were created and sold.
This was the beginning of a 4-year love affair with the copy machines at Kinko’s as original drawings were photocopied onto card stock. Many orders were taken for custom cards. The time invested in the creation of the cards far surpassed the financial rewards. However, all card recipients were delighted with their cards.
The set plainly shows influence of an Art Trip to New York. The Beast’s claw from Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Broadway musical show is recreated. Another influence is that of Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s illustration of ‘Le Petit Prince.’ The representation of music also began to interest me – paving the way for the later Jazz-influenced series ‘Visual Jazz’ the following year.
